Election Day is Tuesday

Douglas County residents go to the polls on Tuesday in only the second June primary election held in Nevada history.

Clerk-Treasurer Ted Thran said he expects about 5,000 people will turn out to vote on Election Day.

About 17 percent of the active voters, or 4,429 have already cast either an early or absentee ballot in the election.

About 150 electronic voting machines will be delivered to the dozen polling places around the county over the weekend.

"They're all lined up and ready to go out," he said. "They'll be locked up and have security seals so we know if they've been tampered with."

Polling places open at 7 a.m. Thran asked that voters bring their sample ballots to speed along registration.

He said some folks have different polling locations this year, including Tahoe voters, who will all vote at Kahle Community Park. In prior years some voted at the Tahoe Transportation Center and others in Roundhill.

Voters can also look up their registration at the county Web site, or call the clerk's office at 782-9020 should they have questions.

Nevada has a closed primary, which means that voters need to be registered in a party to vote in a partisan election.

Republicans have the most races, with the races for county commission and Assembly District 39. They also have a choice in who will run for U.S. Senate in November.

Democrats will get to select which candidates for U.S. Senate and House of Representatives will be on the ballot in November.

All voters, including nonpartisans, will have the races of State Board of Education and University Regent on their ballots. The top two vote-getters in those two races will go on the ballot in November.

Thran said results will be available at 8 p.m. Tuesday, which is after The Record-Courier goes to press. Visit www.recordcourier.com for results.
