Tiger Camp set for 25th year

When then Douglas High basketball coach Andy Hughes started up the Tiger Basketball Camp 25 years ago, no one could have imagined how far it would go.

In the years since, it's become a summer mainstay, selling out its last three years.

This year's camp is set for June 12-14 for players in first through sixth grade.

"We never thought it would go this long," said Douglas girls' basketball coach Werner Christen, who has been involved since the beginning. "We've had some good times.

"One year, the lights blew up on us. I remember going in the gym and just being able to see Andy's silhouette. He was planning to bring in those big contractor lights but we managed to get an electrician in there to fix the lights.

"We've been at it a long time. It's getting to where we're seeing kids of kids who were a part of the camp. It's neat to see how it has developed."

Cost for the camp is $130 per player and $90 per player for families with more than two children attending.

The camp is directed by Douglas High coaches Corey Thacker, Christen and David Pfaffenberger with clinicians Phil Emm, Brian Mello and Rosi Contri also involved.

Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. Players should wear basketball shoes and gym shorts to the camp.

A typical day includes a 20-minute warm-up followed by an hour-long special guest clinic. Sessions are blocked off focusing individually on defensive footwork, shot development, team development, passing and fastbreak drills.

Players are grouped into teams, which practice for 15 minutes in the afternoon and then play games for the final two hours.

Lunch is not served at the camp, but a snack bar will be available.

Registration forms can by picked up at the Douglas High School front office, Big Daddy's bicycle shop in Gardnerville or The Record-Courier office in Gardnerville.
