Commissioner candidates report spending so far in primary race

Douglas County commission District 5 candidate Barry Penzel is financing his own campaign to the tune of $10,000.

Even without the loan, Penzel outraised commissioner Mike Olson, reporting $3,150 in contributions to Olson's $3,118.54 in the primary race.

Penzel has also outspent Olson by more than three times so far in the campaign.

According to documents filed with the Nevada Secretary of State's Office, Penzel's largest contributor is the Starrett Family Trust of Jobs Peak Ranch, which donated $3,000.

Penzel spent $6,459.63, mostly on signs, printing and mailing.

Olson's chief backer is ParkPAC, the political action committee associated with the Edgewood Companies, which own tracts of land in Carson Valley and South Lake Tahoe. The committee donated $2,500 to Olson's campaign. Olson's other major donor is former commissioner Don Miner, gave $400, according to paperwork filed with the Nevada Secretary of State's Office.

Olson has spent $1,876.65 so far, mostly with printer Data Graphics. Olson also contributed $200 to the Douglas Animal Welfare Group and $200 to the Douglas County Republican Central Committee.

This is the first year contributions and expense reports have been filed online with the Nevada Secretary of State. Candidate Dianne Humble's report does not appear on the site.

Because all three candidates for District 5 are Republicans, the top two vote-getters will go on to the general election in November.

Early voting continues next week in the run-up to the June 12 Primary Election.

More than 2,500 voters have cast a ballot either early or absentee in the first week of voting.

That represents 10 percent of the electorate. Turnout has been highest among Republicans, who are at 13 percent. It has been lowest among nonpartisan and minor party voters with 3 percent.
