On Sunday morning, First Baptist Church of Minden-Gardnerville will welcome Larry Webb as its new senior pastor.
Not wanting to spend the rest of his life in the Bay Area, the 61-year-old is looking forward to planting his roots in Carson Valley.
"I felt God wanted me here," Webb said. "My gifts, my strengths and my temperament fit this church."
Before becoming a pastor Webb earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from LeTourneau University, but then felt an irresistible calling to enter the pastorate.
"I am the son of a pastor, so I was able to see the down side. It was the last thing I wanted to do," Webb said. "It was a complete 180-degree turnaround for me. God put His desire in my heart. I just had to do it."
Webb ultimately earned a master's degree in theological studies from Bakke Graduate University in Seattle Wash., and over time has become an experienced church planter.
He has been the beginning pastor of four church plants in Southern California, Missouri and most recently Northern California.
Although he had been raised in evangelical churches from childhood he said he was disappointed because most of his questions were never answered.
"Convinced that inquiring minds want to know, my vision is to create a relevant church that addresses life's most challenging questions from an intelligent, objective, thought-provoking and thoroughly biblical perspective," Webb said. "I love to see life change in people which is the life thrust of my ministry. I like to see the Bible change people from the inside out."
Webb's immediate plans for the church include establishing a children's ministry, with a youth ministry in the future.
"There are wonderful people here," he said. "I plan to spend the rest of my life in Carson Valley."
Webb and his wife, Hope, have been married since college. They have three sons and four grandchildren.
Sunday services start at 10:30 a.m. First Baptist Church is located at 1311 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville. The phone number is 783-0738.
