Sonora pass open in less than four months

Sonora Pass opened on Friday, the earliest date in the past seven years for which records are available.

CalTrans announced the opening on Friday morning. The pass was closed on Jan. 21, making this the shortest time it has been closed in the last seven years.

Highway 108, which passes the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in Pickel Meadow, crosses the Sierra at Sonora Pass.

Ebbetts Pass on Highway 4 which connects Bear Valley to the rest of Alpine County is still closed.

Monitor Pass opened on April 16, after being closed for one of the shortest amounts of time in the seven years of mountain pass closures listed on the Caltrans website.

April saw a continuation of dry months in most of the Sierra, with Monitor Pass receiving only 63 percent of average moisture.

While Sonora Pass received 102 percent average moisture for the month, snow telemetry maintained by the Natural Resources Conservation Service indicates it's at 51 percent for this time of year.
