Belief in immortality is an instinct unique to the human race. The sciences of history, anthropologists, and archeology have traced belief in immortality back to the earliest human civilization. Their findings show that belief in immortality has had a profound influence on every civilization and every culture it has been possible to study. So much so, that it is accurate to say it is one of the strongest of all human instincts. Interestingly enough the Bible tells us that God placed this particular instinct into the human make up. Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us; "He has put eternity in our hearts."
Another interesting survey shows that, in our own country, when asked, do you believe you are going to heaven? Ninety percent of people would say "yes" or, "I hope so." Of course there is a small group who claim to be atheists who would scorn even the question. Still, I was surprised to learn that the overwhelming majority of people are certain they are going to heaven. Of course the Gospel of Christ teaches that God has made it possible through the sacrifice of His Son, that all men can be saved for God takes no pleasure in the punishment and death of even the most vile and evil men. Jesus said, "whosoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16 and Ezekiel. 33:11).
The Bible confirms that not only is the human soul eternal but that every person who ever lived will be reunited with their soul, and enter into the state of immortality at a future bodily resurrection. However, what sort of immortality one experiences and what sort of environment one will live forever in, is quite a different matter. The Scriptures declares only two possibilities - heaven or hell.
Those who believe and confess that Jesus is the Son of God will be pardoned from all their sins and live forever in heaven. Those who ignore or reject Jesus Christ as Savior will live forever in misery and regret. Keep in mind that to believe in Jesus means more than believing as one would a fact of history. It implies a daily conscious trust, and obedience to His instructions for living recorded in the New Testament.
In short, the Bible declares that heaven is not automatic or the default destiny for the human race and the reason is traced back to the sin of Adam in the Garden of Eden. That is why it is vitally important for each person to repent of their sins and trust in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What the Lord Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14 should be a serious wake up call for all who read these words. "Wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it."
