Artist's work featured on cowboy poetry poster

A Coleville cowhorse in Californio-style tack is the face of the 2012 Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival collector poster.

"El Gato's Bit," by award-winning Western artist and Gardnerville resident Karen Aleman, depicts a fleabitten gray roping horse and part of his rider. The antique silver bit the horse is wearing was made by Mexican silver smith El Gato.

"I really like the idea they (festival organizers) chose a painting of a real local cowhorse that works in this area," Aleman said. "I have a lot of respect for people who are trying to revise the Californio style of riding."

The original piece was done in the medium of pastel, which Aleman prefers to work in.

"It's much like the texture of chalk. It's very forgiving," she said. "It's a very soft medium. You can easily capture the light with pastel."

Aleman is a Spanish and art teacher at Coleville High School, who began painting professionally seven years ago.

"I like to paint the things I see around me in this area," she said. "I love to paint the landscape of Gardnerville."

Aleman is giving an artist demonstration on Saturday of the Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival at Trimmers Outpost.

Western art, gifts and merchandise is a major element of the April 26-29 festival. Art galleries will be located around Genoa and will feature the work of artists from all over the West. Visitors will find paintings, photography, and craft work reflecting the western heritage of the area.

In the heart of Genoa, a Western mercantile tent will feature western artisans, jewelers, more artists, and western tack, along with music and clothing.

The official cowboy gift shop is also located there with logo merchandise from the festival, including the official festival poster and festival scarf. Other souvenir merchandise will be available, including CDs and an array of books by local authors, along with historical works depicting the pioneer roots of Nevada and Genoa, and other select memorabilia.

Entrance to all of these is free, with no day pass required.
