Artist's work featured on cowboy poetry poster

A Coleville cowhorse in Californio-style tack is the face of the 2012 Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival collector poster.

"El Gato's Bit," by award-winning Western artist and Gardnerville resident Karen Aleman, depicts a fleabitten gray roping horse and part of his rider. The antique silver bit the horse is wearing was made by Mexican silver smith El Gato.

"I really like the idea they (festival organizers) chose a painting of a real local cowhorse that works in this area," Aleman said. "I have a lot of respect for people who are trying to revise the Californio style of riding." …
