Coleville hiker found dead a mile from home

A 78-year-old Coleville man was found dead about a mile home after he was reported overdue from hiking by his son.

Carial McCall was last seen on March 22, according to the Mono County Sheriff's Office. His son called when McCall didn't return from a short hike.

Mono County Deputies and Antelope Valley Fire Department responded to the home and began a search inside and out with no results. The Mono County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team was then dispatched to respond to aid in broadening the search area.

Search efforts continued throughout the night. On March 23, additional agencies including the California Rescue Dog Association, personnel from Alpine County, and a CHP helicopter joined the search to locate McCall. The search continued throughout the day and night with negative results.

By March 25, the search team included personnel from Mono, El Dorado, and Inyo Counties including several additional rescue dog teams. At approximately, 1 p.m., McCall was found dead in steep terrain.

His death is under investigation by the Mono County Sheriff's Office but appears to be of natural causes. Final cause of death is pending autopsy and toxicology reports.
