The newly crowned Mr. DHS, Trevor Shaffer, celebrated his win Friday night with a hamburger and rootbeer float at Katie's.
More than 400 people attended the annual competition that raised $3,000 for the senior's safe and sober grad night.
"I was pretty shocked," Shaffer said of his win. "Everybody there did a really good job."
Having played the piano for 12 years, Shaffer had no problem with the talent portion of the competition. He played "Waterfall" by John Schmidt.
It was the pickup line category that gave him the most trouble, only coming up with his line that night.
It was his younger brother, Casey, that gave him the line, "Last night I laid there using the stars to count the qualities I love about you, but I ran out of stars."
"Afterwards, he (Casey) made it a point to tell me he was one of the reasons I won, and he wanted to keep my crown," Trevor said. "I let him wear it for a little bit."
Mr. Congeniality, Cory Dillon, said he was surprised as well when his name was announced.
"I think it's cool everyone voted for me. It's an honor," he said. "I was a little surprised. I thought somebody else would win."
Dillon's talent was performing the Nutcracker ballet, complete with a gold tutu.
"I was just trying to have fun. Hopefully it was funny too," he said. "It was a good time and I got to meet new people. It was kind of a bond with all of us doing it."
Activities Director Karen Lamb said this group of 16 seniors was one of the best she's worked with for Mr. DHS.
"My favorite part is always the opening number," she said. "It's about all of them. It's funny and it shows their personalities."
She also encouraged this year's juniors to try out for Mr. DHS next year.
"It's fun. You should leave high school with as many memories as possible," Lamb said. "This is the type of thing that makes high school fun, and ends your senior year with a bang."
