Calendar survey available to families until March 12

The Douglas County School Board is seeking families' input in the development of school calendars for future years.

The online survey can be found on the front page of the school district's website,, and is available until March 12.

Those having any difficulty accessing the electronic survey can contact their child's school and gain access to a computer.

Board members said calendar development is often a challenging process since there are so many different viewpoints and preferences in any community or neighborhood. "Over the past couple of years, we have heard a variety of comments about our calendars," they said in a press release. "Some want to start the school year earlier and others wish to start later. Each group has a reason or rationale for its preference."

This survey will ask families to consider a variety of options. There is a question about semester exams, so teenage children are encouraged to participate as well.

"Our board is interested in collecting input from as many families and staff as possible," the statement read. "Please keep in mind this is a survey and not a ballot. Please take the survey one time only. There are windows with each question that will allow you to type in comments."

Recommendations for the 2012-13 calendar will be presented to school board members on March 29.The 2013-14 and 2014-15 calendars will be decided at a later time.
