Nick Cohee, a 2006 graduate of Douglas High School, former Kirkwood junior racing standout, captain and first-team NCAA All-American at the University of Utah is having his best season of his 15-year ski racing career.
He defeated 16 of 17 members of the United States Ski Team at the North American Series Giant Slalom held at Vail, Colo. over the weekend, producing his best performance of his career.
"Nick not only beat most of the U.S. Ski Team roster, he also defeated a handful of athletes currently racing on the World Cup in Europe who came over to the United States to compete in this prestigious event," said Jake Korencan, head coach at the University of Utah. "With the entire U.S. coaching staff present, they now know there's a college athlete who, come graduation in May, is ready to compete for a spot on the U.S. Ski Team heading to Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Nick's skiing right now is on a par with most of the world, amazing for someone who does not have the same benefits provided the U.S. Ski Team athletes."
Cohee has two NCAA races left before he heads to Bozeman, Montana on March 7 to compete in the 2012 NCAA Alpine Skiing Championships, where he will be the favorite in the Giant Slalom to win his first NCAA Title. He then heads East and to Canada for the North American Alpine Skiing Championships, then to Winter Park, Colorado for U.S. National Alpine Skiing Championships in April where he will battle for a podium spot with the nation's best.
