The second annual Have a Heart celebration to benefit Friends In Service Helping is set for Feb. 18.
The fundraiser dinner will honor churches and pastors who have played a role in founding and developing FISH, Director Jim Peckham said.
FISH's goal is to try to have only one annual fundraiser in the first quarter. Throughout the year, help comes from a number of sources such as grocery stores, service clubs, churches, state organizations, grants from the city, the Chamber of Commerce and individuals.
The event is $50 a plate, with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Carson Nugget banquet rooms. All proceeds benefit FISH.
The menu includes grilled marinated colette steak, white truffle mashed potatoes, salad with raspberry vinegarette, grilled asparagus and cheesecake.
Special guests will be the Rev. Jerry Hanley, former pastor of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community and one of three church leaders who founded FISH. The Rev. Stan Pesis of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a current and early FISH board member who has helped the organization to grow, will also be honored.
Other current leaders who will be guests at the dinner will be the Revs. Chuck Durante of St. Teresa, Rob Jennings-Teats of First United Methodist Church, Bruce Kochsmeier of First Presbyterian Church and Jeff Paul of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
Peckham said Leah Giffin was the first executive director of FISH, when it was a food pantry, but they have not been able to find her.
The second director was Richard Fleckenstein, whose widow will be at the Have a Heart celebration to receive recognition for him.
From there, Monte Fast held the reins until recently, when Peckham took over from interim director Jeff Fast.
Besides the thrift stores on North Carson Street and Gardnerville FISH operates a food bank, dining room, a health clinic, a 12-bed women's shelter and a 16-bed men's shelter.
Part of the Feb. 18 festivities will include auctioning off a 2011 Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom Sportster valued at $10,000. Live and silent auction items also will be offered.
