The Wildcats softball team opens its 2012 season in Southern Nevada this weekend, gathering valuable experience for Scenic West Athletic Conference competition that begins February 10. WNC will play four Arizona teams in non-conference contests on Friday and Saturday in Henderson: Eastern Arizona College, Central Arizona, Phoenix College, and GateWay Community College.
WNC brings in a strong new class of freshmen and sophomore transfers to join the returning sophomores who helped carry the load last season. Three new pitchers will reload the Wildcats bullpen: Alexia Alley of Mountain View Christian HS (Las Vegas), Jordan Garcia of Spring Creek HS and Ali-Marie Lostra of Elko HS. At catcher, Katirina Rand of Legacy HS (Las Vegas) will assist Carson High's Megan Hein.
New infielders include Lyzette Aguilar of Yerington HS, Alia Cox of Lakeland HS (Rathdrum, ID), Tori Crowell of Yerington HS, Lauren Knorzer of Carson HS, Courtney Lange of Wooster HS (Reno), Taleas Marble of Box Elder HS (Corinne, UT), and Rebecca Nelson of Douglas HS.
New outfielders include Carlie Callahan of Fernley HS, Emily Nagel of Reno HS, Jennifer Quam of North Valleys HS (Reno), and Trinity Thom of Yerington HS.
WNC is a Division 1 member of the National Junior College Athletics Association and competes in one of the most challenging leagues in the nation. Teams come to Carson City from Utah, Idaho, Colorado and Southern Nevada.
Anyone who is looking for a fun activity on Friday and Saturday afternoons is invited to come out for Wildcats softball games, which are played at Edmonds Sports Complex in south Carson City. Tickets are available at the door, along with season passes. Information: www.wnc.edu/athletics, or contact the WNC Business Office at 445-4221.
