Carson Valley FFA members win awards at national convention

Members of the Carson Valley Future Farmers of America Chapter participated in two National FFA Career Development Events held in conjunction with the 84th National FFA Convention Oct. 19-22 in Indianapolis, Ind.

During the Floriculture Career Development Event, the team, led by advisor Allyson Lammiman, was awarded a silver emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 166 other participants.

Merecedes English received a silver emblem, Christina Beaty received a silver emblem, Laurel Brown received a silver emblem, and Tawnie Wentz received a silver emblem.

The top six individuals and the national winning team members received scholarships to further their education at a post-secondary institution of their choice.

In the floriculture event, FFA members test their knowledge and skills in the production and retailing of flowers, plants and foliage.

Participants must complete a general knowledge exam on the floriculture industry, identify plant materials, and demonstrate problem solving and decision-making skills, employment and customer service skills, technical floral skills and the ability to work as a team.

Members of the Carson Valley FFA Chapter also participated in the National FFA Horse Evaluation Career Development Event.

The team, led by Lammiman, was awarded a silver emblem for that event.

Members also competed for individual awards with 174 other participants. Abigail Chitwood received a gold emblem, Kylen Flannagan received a silver emblem, Elana Ketchian received a silver emblem, and Rebecca Glocknitzer received a silver emblem.
