Skiing: Denny wins League duels

Top performers at the Tahoe Basin League Championships on Thursday at Heavenly Mountain Resort didn't mind that they didn't qualify for next week's state meet.

Their final race of the season on World Cup run was a unique duel format that was popularized by the pro ski tour that used to frequent the Lake Tahoe ski resorts.

“I'd rather go to this than state. It's funner,” said Douglas' Wyatt Denny, who won the boys' event. “I'd rather race against another person, just trying to beat them.”

Whittell High's Rachel Laub, the girls' winner, expressed similar support of the duel format.

“I don't mind that I didn't make state, then I wouldn't have gotten to come to this,” she said. “You feel the person next to you. It's knowing where they are, and the second you see them pass you, you just go.”

South Shore skiers grabbed four of the podium spots.

Finishing behind Denny were South Tahoe High's Jake Krazczek in second and Jared Lindner in third. Joining Laub on the girls' podium were runner-up Melissa Ewing of South Tahoe and third-place finishers Kelly Altick of North Tahoe.

Ewing and Laub are former club softball teammates, so their final turned into a friendly match.

“I was super nervous because we are really good friends,” Laub said. “My heart was beating, and I was like: ‘What if I don't win, What if I don't win?”

Laub said she would have missed the state meet anyway because she is heading north to the Winter Games in Vancouver where plans are to watch ski jumping, hockey and figure skating.

The Nevada state meet, which will include both South Tahoe teams and Whittell boys' squad, is scheduled for Feb. 20-21 at Mount Rose's Slide Mountain.

The Tahoe Basin League regular season wrapped up earlier in the week at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Final TBL boys standings, including points, were South Tahoe winning its second straight title with a total of 35; Whittell, 26; Truckee, 26; North Tahoe, 21, Douglas, 11; and Incline, 8. For the girls, South Tahoe earned its first trip to the Nevada state meet with a total of 35, followed by Truckee, 29; North Tahoe, 26; Douglas, 15; Whittell, 13; and Incline, 8.

Grant Denny was 11th on the boys' side while Hillary Sapp was sixth and Crystal Rutledge was 10th on the girls' side.
