Road controls are in effect around Lake Tahoe and over the passes as a winter storm started dropping snow in Carson Valley at about 3:30 p.m. today.

Snow tires or chains are being required on Highways 50 and 28 through Douglas County, and over Kingsbury Grade.

Snow tires or chains are being required over Carson Pass on Highway 88. Chains are mandatory on Highway 50 over Echo Summit.

An accident at 12:45 p.m. closed Interstate 80 for most of the afternoon. Westbound lanes of the freeway reopened at 4:10 p.m.

Several accidents are being reported to the California Highway Patrol, including a spinout on Highway 88 at Red Lake Road at 3:54 p.m.

There was a property damage accident at Highway 50 West and Highway 395 at 4:24 p.m.

Honey Lake reported 3 inches of snow at 1:02 p.m. High winds of up to 78 mph were recorded in Mono County.

A light snow has been falling in Carson Valley and is accumulating on area roads. The temperature is about 28 degrees.
