Road controls are in effect on Sierra highways this morning.

Snow tires or chains are required on Highway 50 over Spooner Summit, Kingsbury Grade, and over Echo Summit.

Chains or four-wheel drive is required over Carson Pass on Highway 88 from Woodfords all the way to Amador County.

Heavenly Ski Resort reported 8 inches of snowfall overnight.

Friday night's fierce storm produced more wind than moisture in Carson Valley. Gusts of up to 64 mph were measured in Fish Springs, as rapidly shifting winds knocked down trees and power lines.

The winds started early on Friday with a trained National Weather Service spotter recording an 80 mph wind gust at 6:41 a.m. The Nevada Department of Transportation reported sustained winds of 40 mph at Highway 395 and Airport Road at 8:30 a.m.

Heavy winds peaked at lunch time when a large evergreen behind Sharkey's snapped at the trunk, knocking down power lines that set the tree on fire.

Moisture began to fall in Western Nevada at about 2 p.m. Gardnerville received about .05 inches in the storm.

By 4 p.m. Friday, snow was starting to stick on Sierra highways. Glenbrook received 2 inches of snow by 5 p.m. Douglas County deputies reported vehicles were having difficulty making their way over Spooner Summit Kingsbury Grade.
