Spooky stories at the library today
Tilly the Witch reads spooky stories for children 4 and older at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden. Library Services Coordinator Carol Nageotte, aka Tilly, reads from “Making Friends with Frankenstein: A Book of Monstrous Poems and Pictures,” by Colin McNaughton and “The Spook Matinee: and Other Scary Poems for Kids,” by George Ulrich and ends with “Spider on the Floor.”
Other library books, special pop-up books, and a flashlight story featured. Children may dress in Halloween costumes for this fun event.

Nevada Day and Halloween
State and local governments are closed Oct. 30 in observance of Nevada Day.
The Nevada Day parade is Saturday in Carson City. Because of Nevada Day festivities on Saturday, Oct. 31, Carson City holds trick-or-treating on Friday, Oct. 30.
Neighborhood trick-or-treating is celebrated on Halloween, Oct. 31, in Carson Valley and everywhere else.
History of clothing
The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park presents an exhibit of clothing and accessories worn by the Dangberg family from the 1890s to the 1960s, noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Admission $3 for adults, free for children 12 and younger. Regular tours will not be offered during the exhibit. Visitors should dress in warm clothing. Trick or Treat Safety Street
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office Trick or Treat Safety Street is 3-8 p.m. Oct. 31 at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Prizes, contests and plenty of candy from local business and merchants. Cost is a $2 cover charge for each participating child. Information, 782-8153.
Harvest festival at fairgrounds
Calvary Chapel's Harvest Festival is 5 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Pinenut Road in Gardnerville. Free food, drinks, games, candy, cake walk and live entertainment. Admission is two bags of candy per family. Non-frightening costumes encouraged. Information, 265-3259.
Haunted house
The Warmest Little Haunted House in Town is 5-7:30 p.m. Oct. 31 in the Carson Valley United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Event is hosted by Incline Village High School Key Club and is recommended for age 12 and younger. Information, 782-4600.
Elks Halloween party
Minden-Douglas Elks Lodge No. 2670 hosts a Halloween party and pot luck dinner Oct. 31. Bar open at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. Dance to music by Dave Fabrizio. Cost is $10 plus a food dish. The lodge is at 1276 Pit Road, Gardnerville Ranchos. Reservations and dish sign-ups, Peter Engle, 265-1764.
Visit haunted places
Spirit tours at the Dake House and the White House in Genoa are 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Oct. 31. The evening continues at the White House, Genoa's haunted bed and breakfast. Make reservations to spend the night at (755) 588-2103.
Tickets for the spirit tour are $7. Reservations recommended but tickets may be purchased at the door. Refreshments served.
The Dake House is at 2242 Main St. in Genoa, next to the Genoa Post Office. Information, 782-4951. This is not a fright night.

The fifth annual Carson Valley Harvest Festival is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Corley Ranch, 859 Highway 395, a mile south of Pinenut Road in Gardnerville. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and children 3 to 17, free for children 2 and younger. Information, corleyranch.com
