Family and friends of Jason Woellner, who died Sept. 27 of Lou Gehrig's disease, are going ahead with a benefit Oct. 15 at the governor's mansion in Carson City to assist his family with expenses.

Woellner, 38, died at his Indian Hills home of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Woellner was diagnosed with the incurable disease two years ago.

Woellner grew up in Genoa. He worked as the sous chef at the Station Grill for 14 years until May 2008 when he became unable to work.

In November 2008, Woellner's wife Deena was laid off from work. She was his primary caregiver along with his mother Brooke Woellner.

He also has a 14-year-old daughter, Katie, a freshman at Carson High School.

“Jammin' for Jason,” set for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, was set up before Woellner died to assist with expenses.

Admission is $5 and includes a raffle ticket. Entertainment is to be provided by Hick'ry Switch.

Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Family members said merchants across Northern Nevada have donated dozens of items.

Donations may be made at any Bank of America to the David Jason Woellner Medical Fund, account No. 501 004 699 880.
