Nevada State Parks hosts a free presentation 11 a.m. Saturday at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. Carson Valley historian Robert W. Ellison will speak about Valley pioneer Ira Manley Luther. The free outdoor program is one of a series of monthly speakers planned for the 2009 season.

Ellison will speak about Luther's influence on Douglas County's formative years and why he has been forgotten in account of the area's history. Ellison calls Luther one of the area's earliest entrepreneurs, “a man of real grit and substance.”

Ellison has been a teacher, deputy sheriff and was head of security at Bently Nevada. His books on the history of Carson Valley include “Long Beard,” the biography of Warren Wasson, an early Genoa pioneer and Nevada's first U.S. marshal and “First Impressions,” a history of the Emigrant Trail through Carson Valley.

Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, located just west of Minden at 1450 Highway 88, features historic buildings constructed between 1857 and 1920, including what was once one of the most prominent homes in Carson Valley. The site was settled in 1857 by Carson Valley pioneer Heinrich F. Dangberg, Sr.

The free outdoor program is one of a series planned for the season.
