The Carson Valley Trails Association and two hiking groups installed a memorial bench on the interpretive loop of the Faye-Luther Trail System on Nov. 10. Anne Phillips and about 20 hikers helped the CVTA create a bench in memory of her husband, Charles, who died in 2003.
By donating the bench, Phillips provided a place for other hikers to rest and enjoy the same view of Carson Valley that she and her husband enjoyed.
The new bench is one of four installed as part of a Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service-approved improvement project started in 2007. The work on this project, all done by volunteers under the direction of the CVTA, involved re-routing existing trails to make them more sustainable and hiker-friendly. New loops were added to provide a variety of hike lengths, grades and views.
Work on the northern section of the trail system includes a 1.5-mile equestrian loop and connector trail to the Jobs Peak Ranch Trail. Informational signs will also be installed as part of the project expected to be completed in spring.
The Faye-Luther Trail System trailhead is on the west side of Carson Valley at the southern end of Foothill Road. It is open to hikers, mountain bikers and equestrian users.
