Golf: Wicker wins Sierra League tournament

Print Comment
Douglas sophomore Thomas Wicker continued his stellar golf season Tuesday, winning the Sierra League tournament at Washoe Golf Course with a 75.

It was his second tournament win in league play and third overall on the year.

“Thomas didn’t feel he hit the ball as well as he has in the past, but he was able to score well,” Douglas coach Brent Eddy said. “That’s the great thing about him. He understands how to manage a golf course and can recover from one or two bad shots because of his superior short game.”

Over the weekend, Wicker shot a 2-under-par 70 at the California Junior Tour’s Spring Championship.

With Tuesday’s win, he moved into first place in the Nevada Cup standings with 387 points.

Carson’s John Singer is currently in second on the year with 327.5 points and Damonte Ranch’s C.J. Gibson is in third with 310.5 points.

As a team, Douglas took fifth with a 443 but remained in second place in the league standings behind Carson with 24 points.

Senior Troy Shields shot an 88, Cody Hines shot a 92, Eric Guzman shot a 93, Trevor Wentz shot a 95.

“As a team, we did not finish as well as we would have liked,” Eddy said. “We are definitely capable of being there, it is just a matter of all the boys playing well on the same day.

“We just need to have a couple of good rounds going into the regional tournament to build our confidence. We’ll spend a lot of time on the driving range and the putting green over the next couple of weeks to iron out all the inconsistencies.”
