In Carson: Man receives probation in mail theft

Print Comment
One of two men charged in the theft of mail from west side Carson City mailboxes was sentenced to three years probation on Tuesday.

Dylan Gregory, 22, pleaded to two counts of gross misdemeanor opening, reading or publishing a sealed letter or telegram.

In addition to three years probation, Gregory must serve 80 hours of community service, abstain from alcohol and drugs and adhere to a curfew.

Gregory was arrested early Dec. 9 along with co-defendant David Scott Killen, 23, and Tristan Ledford, 19, both of Carson City, after a homeowner spotted them rifling through mailboxes.

When police pulled their vehicle over, Killen was at the wheel, and Gregory and Ledford were passengers.

Mail found inside the vehicle and statements made after their arrests indicated the trio was looking for credit card applications and holiday cards containing money, according to court records.

No charges were filed against Ledford, who lives near where the alleged thefts took place.

Reno Postal Inspector Steve Hofheins said Tuesday that the state's attorney has decided against pursuing federal charges against Gregory, Killen and Ledford.

Killen was sentenced in January to one year in jail for a February 2007 shooting spree in which he shot out the windows of a number of businesses along Highway 395 from Carson to Gardnerville.

Killen will be tried on the mail theft charges in May.
