Obituaries



Nancy L. Bull

1947-2005

A funeral service for Nancy L. Bull, 58, a longtime Gardnerville resident, was Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Gardnerville.

Ms. Bull died July 29, 2005, at home in Reno following a lengthy illness. Although she lived in Reno for the past three years, she considered Gardnerville home.

She was born in Gardnerville on Jan. 15, 1947, to Ira and Marian Gansberg Bull.

She graduated from Douglas High School in 1965 and attended the University of Nevada, Reno. Ms. Bull was an insurance agent in Reno, a dispatcher for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and an adjudicator for the Nevada State Bureau of Disability.

Among her survivors are her daughter and son-in-law Heidi and Rob Brown, and grandchildren Scott and Cody Brown, all of Sparks; brother and sister-in-law Elmer and Kim Bull of Yerington; brother and sister-in-law Ernest and Cheryl Bull of Gardnerville; and nephews Ernest, Wayne, James and Bobby Bull, and niece Allison Bull.

Burial will be at Mottsville Cemetery in Minden.

FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Bessie Ella Flathers

1925-2005

Bessie "Betty" Ella Flathers passed way June 28, 2005, surrounded by her family at her home in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Born Jan. 18, 1925, in Mulberry, Kans., Betty grew up on a farm in Kansas City, Mo., with her parents, Alma and Ace Carpenter, and eight brothers and sisters. Her father was a coal miner and her mother took care of the children. Betty was a professional chorus dancer and also a welder on battleships during World War II. She met her husband, James Raymond Flathers, at a dance-a-thon. He was also a dancer and a fireman. In 1961 Betty moved to South Lake Tahoe, with her husband and four children, where she worked as a Keno writer at Harvey's Wagon Wheel. She then moved to Coeur d'Alene, where she spent the last four years of her life.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Banducci of South Lake Tahoe and Pamela Saunders and Rose Preece, both of Coeur d'Alene; sons-in-law, Brian, Monte and Jim; seven brothers and sisters; three half brothers and two half sisters; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, Jimmy; and brothers, Chuck and Freddy.

A celebration of her life was held with her family and was presided over by her grandson, Brant D. Colston of Carson City, Nev. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Dave Iverson and his wife, Sharon, at Prayer Mountain Church, 1085 Smith Way, Folsom, CA 95630.



Daniel Robert Griffith

1934-2005

A memorial service is 11 a.m. Aug. 13 at Sharkey's for Daniel "Dirty Dan, the Traveling Man" Robert Griffith, a Douglas County resident for 28 years.

Born July 29, 1934 to Rebecca and Thomas Griffith, he was a veteran of the Korean War. He died July 18, 2005, of a cardiac arrest.He worked in mining and construction in Gardnerville before he retired. He was a Gardnerville resident for eight years, coming here from Topaz Ranch Estates. He is survived by a sister, Suzanne Saars of Los Angeles; two sons, Jerry Griffith of Crescent City, Calif., and Nick Griffith of Topaz Ranch Estates; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private service for the family will be held in Pope Valley, Calif.



Keith 'Brian' Hooks

1961-2005

A celebration of life is at noon Aug. 13 at Mills Park in Carson City for former Carson City resident Keith 'Brian' Hooks, 44, who died July 17, 2005, from a heart attack in Henderson.

Born June 22, 1961, in Richmond, Calif., to Kenneth and Catherine Hooks, he attended Carson High School and was a member of the Carson swim team. He graduated from Hogan Senior High School in Vallejo, Calif., and joined the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Hooks was a mechanic pipe insulator for Asbestos Worker's Local 16 and had been working as a traveler-mechanic through Las Vegas Local 135 for about eight years.

He was preceded in death by his first-born son, Zachary.

He is survived by his children, Subrina Ashley and Kenneth Keoki; mother Catherine Castillo; parents Kenneth and Emily Hooks; brother William M. Hooks; sister Denise Duncan of Henderson; stepbrothers Fed, Gil Jr. and Perry; grandmothers Mary Swerdfeger of Minden and Mildred Hooks of Vallejo; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws, who reside in California.

A memorial service was held at Palm Mortuary in Henderson. Memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Health Care Inc., 4011 McLeod Drive, Las Vegas, NV, 89121.



Leonard L. Lake

1945-2005

A celebration of life will be Friday at the LDS Chapel at Spruce Street and Deseret Drive, in Minden, for Leonard L. Lake, 60, who died in El Paso, Texas, on July 30, 2005.

Mr. Lake was born March 22, 1945, in McGill, Nev., to Thomas and Lois Lake. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and retired as a major.

He lived in Gardnerville for many years. He coached freshman football for Douglas High School. He owned Len Lake Insurance.

Mr. Lake was preceded in death by his father, Thomas.

He is survived by wife Liz of El Paso, Texas; children Leonard L. Lake Jr. of Gardnerville and Dr. Scott L. Lake of Laramie, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Breanna, Trace, Alexis and Kolton; and two brothers, Ken of Austin, Texas, and Kevin of Ogden, Utah.

Cremation took place in El Paso, Texas and ashes will be spread in Northern Montana.
