Staff Reports

A Reno roofer was sentenced to a maximum of four years in prison for felony driving under the influence.

James Tillman Odell, 41, was arrested May 3 on Highway 50 near Spooner Summit after officers clocked him at 78 mph in the 50 mph zone. When they stopped him, Odell had an open container in the car and a list of prior drunken driving arrests, including one pending in Winnemucca.

A blood test revealed his blood alcohol content was .141.

Attorney Tod Young told District Judge Michael Gibbons that Odell will experience the longest period of sobriety in his adult life in prison.

Odell apologized for the infraction and said he wished it had never happened.

Gibbons said he didn't understand why Parole and Probation hadn't recommended a harsher sentence, because Odell committed the offense while waiting to be sentenced in Humboldt County.

Under Gibbons' sentence, Odell may apply for parole after 13 months and must pay a $2,000 fine. Odell was given credit for 55 days time served.

-- A Gardnerville woman received a suspended one-year jail term for attempted theft after she tried to put $6,243.54 in credit card refunds from her employer's card machine onto her account.

Miranda Tortorici, 20, pleaded guilty to attempted thefts in both Carson City and Douglas County after an investigation turned up a similar theft in Carson City.

She was sentenced to a suspended six-month jail term by Carson District Judge William Maddox, who ordered her to spend two weeks in jail as a condition.

Tortorici's attorney, Mike Roeser, told Douglas District Judge Michael Gibbons that he was surprised by Maddox's sentence.

Tortorici made restitution on the Carson City case and was told that if she did well on probation she could petition for early release to go to school in Illinois.

-- Mark Steven Iosty, who admitted breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment, was sentenced Tuesday to five years' probation.

District Judge Dave Gamble suspended a 36-month sentence in Nevada State Prison for the felony charge of attempted home invasion.

As terms of his probation, Iosty, 44, must stay away from the victim and abstain from drugs and alcohol.

Gamble pointed out that Iosty had at least seven contacts with the sheriff's department and all involved alcohol.

"This is the first time you have been at the felony level," Gamble said. "I hope that is the key. If you fail here, you are going to 'the place.'"

Iosty said he took full responsibility for his actions.

"The relationship was dysfunctional and destructive," he said.

Although he and the victim were no longer together, Iosty said he continued to stay at her residence.

Gamble ordered Iosty to stay out of bars and gambling establishments during his probation.

He also must attend anger management classes and three 12-step meetings a week.

Iosty is to pay $640 restitution to fix the door at the woman's Gardnerville apartment.

-- A $10,000 bench warrant was issued Tuesday for a Carson City man who failed to show up for sentencing for open and gross lewdness.

District Judge Dave Gamble issued a nationwide warrant for Julio Cesar Corona-Juarez, 27, who pleaded guilty in May to exposing himself to women in three stores in north Douglas County.

Corona-Juarez faced a maximum sentence of one year in Douglas County Jail and a $2,000 fine for the misdemeanor charge.

At his arraignment in April, Corona-Juarez told the judge he was drunk and looking for a restroom when the first incident occurred at Ross Dress for Less.

He also was accused of similar crimes at Petco and Wal-Mart in January and February.

His lawyer, Terri Roeser, said someone who answered the telephone at his Carson City residence said Corona-Juarez had moved and they didn't know where he was.
