The Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority hosts a golf tournament at the Carson Valley Golf Course June 3 with registration at 7:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Individual registration is $85, team registration is $340 and hole sponsorship is $100.

Junior golf clinic offered at CV course
The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is teaming up with the Carson Valley Golf Course to offer junior golf clinics for ages 5-16.
The junior golf clinic will be May 7 and times will vary by age group.
The cost is $15 and includes club rentals, golf balls and refreshments.

Valley dojo hosts Mother's Day event
The Carson Valley Dojo will be hosting its annual Mother's Day Women's Karate Practice at Lake Tahoe May 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is slated for the Kahle Community Center at Stateline with Yodan Hiroko Mori leading the practice.
The workshop will focus on ways to use women's differences as strengths in karate and in the application of self-defense. It is open to women of all ability levels and ages. Visit www.carsonvalleydojo. com for more information.
Free soccer clinic at Carson Valley Christian
Carson Valley Christian Center plays host to the Southern California Seahorses for a free soccer skills clinic set for May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The clinic, sponsored by Les Schwab Tire Center of Carson City, provides skill training and sportsmanship exposure to kids ages 6-21.
The Southern California Seahorses and the Nevada Wonders will each have players on hand to instruct the clinic and each athlete will receive a t-shirt, soccer ball and lunch, all provided at no cost.

MEFIYI tennis program open
The MEFIYI foundation and the Genoa Lakes Golf and Tennis Club have partnered to provide a tennis program to the Valley.
Lessons will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year.
Group lessons for all ages are offered with advanced sessions running from 3 to 5 p.m. and intermediate sessions running from 4 to 5 p.m. Beginer sessions run from 5 to 6 p.m. Each group sessions cost $15 and private lessons by appointment are $25 per session.

Awards Banquet in May
The MEFIYI Community Choice Awards honoring outstanding Douglas County youth is scheduled for Saturday, May 14 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club.
A cocktail reception begins at 6:30 p.m., and the dinner runs from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Dinner will feature a six-coure buffet and tickets are $30 per person. Attire is semi-formal.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the construction of Boys and Girls Club Community Center.

Tiger Basketball Camp taking registration
Registration is currently being accepted for the Tiger Basketball Camp, set for this summer.
Camp directors Andy Hughes and Werner Christen will conduct two sessions, one for athletes fourth through eighth grade June 22-24 and one for athletes first through sixth grades July 6-8.
The camp has been held every summer since 1992, and will typically run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Douglas High gyms.
The tentative list of clinicians for this summer includes Aubrey McCreary of the Double-Pump West Coast All-Star Camp, Douglas High's Randy Green, Clovis West's Tom Orlich, Douglas' Joe Bertelone, Bill Gibson of Chico, Douglas' John Summers and Bill Ballinger of the Reno Ballers.
Registration is $95 until June 13, when the price goes up to $100. To attend both camps the cost is $170.

AYSO registration coming up
The Carson Valley chapter of the American Youth Soccer Organization will conduct registration sessions for the 2005 season Tuesday at Scarselli Elementary School from 6 to 8 p.m., May 19 at Gardnerville Elementary School from 6 to 8 p.m. and June 4 and 5 at Lampe Park from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All boys and girls between 4 and 18 years old are welcome to play. The season runs from late July through October.
Early registration fee (March 9 through June 5) includes a soccer ball for each player and costs $55 per player except U5 ($38) and U6 ($45). A family of three or more is $130. Starting June 6, regular registration fee is $70 per player.
New board members have been selected and volunteers are needed for the annual Kit Carson Shootout, held in late fall every year.
The next Carson Valley AYSO board meeting will be at 7 p.m., April 14 at the Rancho Grande Restaurant in Gardnerville.

Parks & Recreation seeking officials
Douglas County Parks & Recreation is currently looking for qualified officials for youth and adult sports in the following programs:
Youth basketball, $18 per game (Saturdays, January-March); Youth flag football, $12 per game (Saturdays, September-November); Youth volleyball, $14 per game (Saturdays, March-May); Adult volleyball, $16 per game (Monday-Thursday, fall, winter and spring); Adult basketball, $19 per game (Monday-Friday and tournaments in the summer and fall); Adult flag football, $18 per game (Sundays, winter).
Officials must be willing to work nights and weekends and have a flexible schedule. Most games last approximately one hour. High School certification is recommended for basketball and volleyball. Parks and Recreation will train and certify for all other sports.
Previous officiating and willingness to be trained in multiple sports is preferred.

16th Annual Kids Fishing Derby
The Kids Fishing Derby is scheduled for June 4 and 5 at Lampe Park.
This year, more than 2,500 children between the ages of three and 12 are expected to sign up for the event.
Three fishing sessions are scheduled: 9-9:30 a.m., 10-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-2 p.m..
Each session will be staffed by volunteers, helping the children catch a trout or two.
Volunteers ages 13 and over are needed.

Fall sports clearance scheduled
A clearance night for all fall sports of the 2005-06 season has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Douglas High School commons.
The mandatory extracurricular drug policy presentation is at 7:15 p.m.
The athlete must attend the presentation along with a parent or legal guardian.
Athletes not in attendance, or athletes without a parent or guardian, at the presentation will not be able to try out.
Free physicals will be available from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., on campus during clearance night. Completed paperwork is required for the physical.
A representative will be on hand to sell ASB stickers. The sticker price for next year's 10th-12th graders is $25 and $20 for next year's freshmen.
While the clearance night has been scheduled to accommodate those athlete's planning to play a sport in the fall, any student planning to play in any sport during the 2005-06 school year is encouraged to attend.

Sharkey Golf Tournament in May
The third annual Sharkey Begovich Swing for a Cure Tournament is accepting team registration, single registration and sponsors for the May 14 shotgun tournament at the Carson Valley Golf Course.
Because of the enormous popularity of the tournament, organizers have added an additional flight to accommodate more players.
The first flight tees off at 7 a.m. and the second flight will tee off at 1 p.m.
Tournament proceeds benefit the Carson-Tahoe Cancer Center.

Genoa Lakes to host U.S. Open Qualifier
Once again, the United States Golf Association has selected Genoa Lakes Golf Club as a qualifying site for the 2005 U.S. Open.
The U.S. Open is scheduled for June 16-19 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
"We are very honored that the USGA has selected our course," Lou Eiguren, Genoa Lakes Golf Club director of golf. "This will be our seventh year in a row as a qualifying site and we look forward to welcoming all the participants."
The qualifying date will be May 9.
"Last year we were blessed with exceptional weather and three golfers shot sub-par rounds," Eiguren said. "We have made a few modifications to the course and we will have to see what impact, if any, they have on the qualifiers this year."
Teen open gym
The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will be sponsoring Teen Open Gym every Friday and Saturday night.
Teens in seventh through 12th grade are welcome to come play basketball, volleyball, games and listen to music.
Friday night goes from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Carson Valley Middle School's Old Gym and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.
