Josefina Sigala turned in first place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle Saturday to lead the Douglas High School girls swimming team in its season opener against South Tahoe at the Carson Valley Swim Center.
Sigala swam the 200 in two minutes, 7.24 seconds, more than eight seconds faster than her nearest competition. In the 100, she swam a 56.88, a little less than three seconds faster than her closest competition.
Despite relatively solid performances by the Tiger girls, South Tahoe won the meet 153-128.
Stephanie Denson won the 100 breaststroke and took second in the 50 free. Freshman Katie O'Neill took second in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke and freshman Whitney Simpson took third in both the 50 free and the 100 backstroke.
Andy Sturgess and Trevor Schaff each picked up two first place finishes to lead the boys team as South Tahoe narrowly defeated Douglas, 123-122.
Sturgess swam in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.50, about 21 seconds faster than his closest competition, and finished the 100 butterfly in 57.52 for his two wins.
Schaff won the 50 free in 24.36 and claimed the 100 backstroke in 1:00.94.
Schaff and Sturgess teamed with Hayes Wilson and Matt Duguay to win the 200 medley relay in 1:49.09.
Justin White took second place in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.
Douglas takes on Carson at Truckee Friday at 2 p.m.
