DHS boys take 6th at state

Douglas High's boys' swimming team, despite its small numbers, finished sixth at the NIAA/U.S. Bank State Swimming Championships held last weekend at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Douglas boys placed sixth with 125 points, far behind champion Boulder City which finished with 365.

Meanwhile, the Douglas girls made the finals in two events en route to a 19th-place finish with 36 points.

"This was a great way to end the season," said Kirk Chiapella, Douglas assistant coach. "We lost so many meets over the course of the season. It shows the quality of our top swimmers."

The Tigers' 200- and 400-yard free relay squads grabbed third-place medals. Trevor Schaff, Justin White, Scott Cronk and Andy Sturgess clocked a 1:32.78. The same group clocked a 3:27.46 in the 400 event. Schaff, a sophomore, went out in a lifetime-best 52.49 in the 400 event.

"Andy swam a good leg," Chiapella said. "Josh and Scott dropped off a bit."

Sturgess finished sixth in both the 50 (22.64) and 100-yard free (49.67). He also swam on both relay teams. The 22.64 was Sturgess' best time all year, according to Chiapella.

Sturgess went out fast in the 100 (23 seconds), but the field caught up to him on the final leg.

"He went out good," Chiapella said. "I wanted him to go out in the low 23s, and he went out in 23. He just couldn't hang on."

Schaff finished eighth in the 100 back, clocking a 59.36 despite not being 100 percent physically.

Cronk finished seventh in the 100 fly, and he won the consolation finals in the 200 free.

"He (Cronk) just didn't have his best performance in the trials," Chiapella said.

Jesse Bunch finished fifth in the 100 breast, clocking a 1:12.09.

The girls' 200 medley relay team of Kaitlin Young, Bunch, Sarah Lillegard and Josefina Sigala clocked a 1:59.35 to finish seventh.

The quartet had qualified eighth out of the prelims.
